The Berliet marque was eliminated by 1980.Marius Berliet started their experiments with automobiles within 1894. Some single-cylinder cars ended up followed in 1900 by way of a twin-cylinder model. In 1902, Berliet took over the plant of Audibert & Lavirotte inside Lyon. Berliet started to assemble four-cylinder automobiles featured with a honeycomb radiator and steel chassis frame was used as opposed to wood. The next year, a model was launched that has been similar to contemporary Mercedes. In 1906, Berliet sold the permit for manufacturing his model for the American Locomotive Company.

The main models experienced four-cylinder engines (2412 cc and 4398 cc, respectively), and there was a six-cylinder style of 9500 cc. A 1539 cc design (12 CV) has been produced between 1910 along with 1912. From 1912, six-cylinder models were manufactured upon individual orders just. The First World War resulted in a massive increase popular. Berliet, like Renault and Latil, produced trucks for this French army. The military orders placed major demands about the factory's capacity, necessitating major investment in production plant and manufacturing plant space. In 1915 a 500 hectare site was ordered between Vénissieux et Saint-Priest in order to build a new major factory. The Berliet CBA started to be the iconic truck on the Voie Sacrée, supplying the battle entrance at Verdun during 1916. 25, 000 of these 4/5 load Berliet trucks, originally launched in 1914, were ordered by your French army. During 1916 40 ones were leaving the plant daily. Under license from Renault, Berliet were also creating shells and battle tanks currently. The number of workers employed increased to 3, 150.By 1917 the benefit of annual turnover received multiplied fourfold since the beginning of the war, and a new legitimate structure was deemed ideal. The company became this Société anonyme des Autos Marius Berliet. As soon as the war the manufacturer reoriented section of its production back to help passenger cars, but Berliet nevertheless discovered themselves with excess ability, as the army was not buying all the vehicles the factory could produce, and overall output halved.Marius Berliet responded towards the outbreak of peace by deciding to make just a single kind of truck and a single type of car, which represented a travel from his pre-war market strategy. The single truck on which Berliet focused was the particular 5 ton CBA that had served the world so well during this war.

The passenger car for being produced, exhibited on the Berliet stand in the 15th Paris Motor Demonstrate in October 1919, was the 3296cc (15HP/CV) "Torpedo" bodied "Berliet Type VB" of modern overall look. Marius Berliet was not merely one to miss a technique: rather than devote moment and engineering talent to creating a new car for the new decade, he obtained and replicated an American Dodge. The Dodge was famously robust, and the Berliet replicate was well received in March 1919 when this had its first open outing, locally, at the Lyon Industry Fair. The headlights were mounted unusually high and the simple disc wheels have been large, giving the car a nice "no nonsense" look. Particularly attractive was the expense of just 11, 800 francs in July 1919. Unfortunately, however, the Berliet engineers failed to ensure the steel used within the car's construction was on the same quality as the American steel used for the actual Dodge, and this resulted in series problems with the early customers of the "Berliet Type VB" and serious reputational harm to the company.

The factory ended up set up to generate the "Berliet Type VB" on the rate of 100 cars every day which would have already been an ambitious target below any circumstances. The rapid drop-off successful for what during this period was the manufacturer's merely passenger car model that followed the quality issues plunged the business into financial difficulties, with losses of second there’s 55 million francs recorded in a single year. Survival was in hesitation, and Berliet was used in judicial administration in 1921. Marius Berliet himself had held 88% of the share capital, but was unable to all the company's creditors plus the firm therefore fell in to the hands of the financial institutions. Berliet was nevertheless competent to retain operational control. During the ensuring decade, supported by a sustained recovery widely used that in turn reflected a highly effective model strategy after 1922, Berliet was able to his debtors and, in 1929, to regain financial control over the business from the banking institutions.
