Ahead of World War I, Berliet offered a choice of models from 8 CV to 60 CV. The main models had four-cylinder engines (2412 closed circuit and 4398 cc, respectively), and there was a six-cylinder type of 9500 cc. A 1539 cc design (12 CV) seemed to be produced between 1910 as well as 1912. From 1912, six-cylinder models were created upon individual orders solely. The First World War concluded in a massive increase sought after. Berliet, like Renault and Latil, produced trucks for the French army. The military orders placed major demands about the factory's capacity, necessitating major investment with production plant and manufacturing facility space. In 1915 a 300 hectare site was obtained between Vénissieux et Saint-Priest so as to build a new major factory. The Berliet CBA grew to become the iconic truck around the Voie Sacrée, supplying the battle entrance at Verdun during 1916. 25, 000 of these 4/5 lot Berliet trucks, originally launched in 1914, were ordered by the actual French army. During 1916 40 advisors were leaving the plant each day. Under license from Renault, Berliet were also generating shells and battle tanks currently. The number of personnel employed increased to 3, 150.By 1917 the price of annual turnover acquired multiplied fourfold since the start of the war, and a new legal structure was deemed suitable. The company became the Société anonyme des Cars Marius Berliet. As soon as the war the manufacturer reoriented portion of its production back to help passenger cars, but Berliet nevertheless identified themselves with excess volume, as the army was no more buying all the pickups the factory could produce, and overall output halved.Marius Berliet responded towards the outbreak of peace by deciding to produce just a single kind of truck and a single style of car, which represented a departure from his pre-war marketplace strategy. The single truck where Berliet focused was the particular 5 ton CBA that had served the world so well during the particular war.

The passenger car to get produced, exhibited on the Berliet stand at the 15th Paris Motor Display in October 1919, was the 3296cc (15HP/CV) "Torpedo" bodied "Berliet Form VB" of modern visual appeal. Marius Berliet was not one to miss a technique: rather than devote period and engineering talent to making a new car for the revolutionary decade, he obtained and cloned an American Dodge. The Dodge was famously robust, and the Berliet content was well received inside March 1919 when it had its first open public outing, locally, at the Lyon Buy and sell Fair. The headlights were mounted unusually high and also the simple disc wheels ended up large, giving the car a nice "no nonsense" look. Particularly attractive was the buying price of just 11, 800 francs in March 1919. Unfortunately, however, the Berliet engineers failed to make sure that the steel used within the car's construction was from the same quality as the United states steel used for the particular Dodge, and this resulted in series problems for the early customers of this "Berliet Type VB" and serious reputational destruction of the company.

The factory ended up set up to make the "Berliet Type VB" at the rate of 100 cars each day which would have been recently an ambitious target under any circumstances. The rapid drop-off in demand for what at this stage was the manufacturer's only passenger car model that followed the coffee quality issues plunged the small business into financial difficulties, with losses of fifty five million francs recorded in a year. Survival was in doubt, and Berliet was put in judicial administration in 1921. Marius Berliet himself had held 88% from the share capital, but was unable to settle all the company's creditors and also the firm therefore fell into the hands of the banks. Berliet was nevertheless able to retain operational control. During the ensuring 10 years, supported by a sustained recovery sought after that in turn reflected a simple yet effective model strategy after 1922, Berliet was able to repay his debtors and, in 1929, to regain financial control over the business from the finance institutions.
