Berliet was a French manufacturer of automobiles, buses, trucks and military autos among other vehicles located in Vénissieux, outside of Lyon, France. Founded in 1899, and apart from a new five-year period from 1944 to 1949 when it had been put into 'administration sequestre' it turned out in private ownership until 1967 when after that it became part of Citroën, and subsequently acquired by means of Renault in 1974 in addition to merged with Saviem in to a new Renault Trucks company in 1978. The Berliet marque was phased out by 1980.Marius Berliet started their experiments with automobiles within 1894. Some single-cylinder cars were being followed in 1900 by the twin-cylinder model. In 1902, Berliet took over the actual plant of Audibert & Lavirotte throughout Lyon. Berliet started to create four-cylinder automobiles featured by the honeycomb radiator and aluminum chassis frame was used as an alternative to wood. The next year, a model was launched that has been similar to contemporary Mercedes. In 1906, Berliet sold the permit for manufacturing his model towards the American Locomotive Company.

Ahead of World War I, Berliet offered a variety of models from 8 CONTINUE to 60 CV. The main models got four-cylinder engines (2412 cc and 4398 cc, respectively), and there was a six-cylinder style of 9500 cc. A 1539 cc design (12 CV) had been produced between 1910 along with 1912. From 1912, six-cylinder models were produced upon individual orders merely. The First World War resulted in a massive increase widely used. Berliet, like Renault and Latil, produced trucks for the actual French army. The military orders placed major demands about the factory's capacity, necessitating major investment with production plant and manufacturer space. In 1915 a 400 hectare site was bought between Vénissieux et Saint-Priest as a way to build a new key factory. The Berliet CBA evolved into the iconic truck about the Voie Sacrée, supplying the battle top at Verdun during 1916. 25, 000 of these 4/5 load Berliet trucks, originally launched in 1914, were ordered by the particular French army. During 1916 40 advisors were leaving the plant on a daily basis. Under license from Renault, Berliet were also generating shells and battle tanks at this time. The number of staff employed increased to 3, 150.By 1917 the worth of annual turnover had multiplied fourfold since the beginning of the war, and a new legal structure was deemed proper. The company became this Société anonyme des Automobiles Marius Berliet.Following war the manufacturer reoriented component of its production back to passenger cars, but Berliet nevertheless discovered themselves with excess capacity, as the army was will no longer buying all the trucks the factory could generate, and overall output halved.Marius Berliet responded on the outbreak of peace by deciding to provide just a single kind of truck and a single kind of car, which represented a leaving from his pre-war marketplace strategy. The single truck where Berliet focused was the actual 5 ton CBA that had served the media so well during the war.

The passenger car to get produced, exhibited on the Berliet stand with the 15th Paris Motor Show in October 1919, was the 3296cc (15HP/CV) "Torpedo" bodied "Berliet Type VB" of modern look. Marius Berliet was not one to miss a technique: rather than devote occasion and engineering talent to creating a new car for the newest decade, he obtained and replicated an American Dodge. The Dodge was once robust, and the Berliet content was well received within March 1919 when the item had its first public outing, locally, at the Lyon Business Fair. The headlights were mounted unusually high as well as the simple disc wheels were being large, giving the car a nice "no nonsense" look. Particularly attractive was the expense of just 11, 800 francs in July 1919. Unfortunately, however, the Berliet engineers failed in order that the steel used inside the car's construction was of the same quality as the North american steel used for the Dodge, and this resulted in series problems for the early customers of the "Berliet Type VB" and serious reputational harm to the company.

The factory were being set up to create the "Berliet Type VB" in the rate of 100 cars on a daily basis which would have also been an ambitious target below any circumstances. The rapid drop-off popular for what during this period was the manufacturer's simply passenger car model that followed the quality issues plunged the small business into financial difficulties, with losses of fifty-five million francs recorded in a single year. Survival was in doubt, and Berliet was put into judicial administration in 1921. Marius Berliet himself had held 88% on the share capital, but was unable to repay all the company's creditors along with the firm therefore fell to the hands of the banking institutions. Berliet was nevertheless able to retain operational control. During the ensuring ten years, supported by a sustained recovery successful that in turn reflected a simple yet effective model strategy after 1922, Berliet was able to pay off his debtors and, in 1929, to regain financial control over the business from the financial institutions.
